Breaking Record, Garuda UNY Team Won 1st Place at Shell Eco Marathon Asia 2022

The Garuda UG-22 car belonging to the UNY Garuda Team broke the record for fuel consumption in Asia. With their distinctive blue clothes, the Garuda UNY Team climbed the podium to receive the 1st place in the Urban ICE Category. A total of 49 teams from 9 countries were challenged to be able to develop cars with energy consumption as efficient as possible. With a fuel consumption of 544 km/l, the Garuda UG22 is able to surpass the previous record of only 500km/l. This is the best achievement for the Garuda UNY Team during its six years of involvement in the Shell Eco Marathon competition.

The achievements of the Garuda UNY Team are not easily obtained. Kesit Bayu Purnomo, Manager of Garuda UNY Team said, “Since we received information about this competition, we immediately made preparations. The preparation took about six months until we finally sent the car to the Mandalika Circuit. The process is quite long, starting from brainstorming, vehicle research, manufacturing, to driver training.' Challenges and obstacles often color the preparation of the UNY Garuda Team to face the competition. Debates are often present in the preparation meeting of the UNY Garuda Team in determining the best strategy. Adhy Wahyu, a member of the UNY Garuda Team said, “We meet sometimes until late at night, so we lose vacation time. Everyone discussed how we could win and achieve the team's target.
Not only in preparation, the Garuda UNY team still has to face challenges and obstacles until the competition takes place. During the competition, the Garuda UNY team encountered a number of problems that hit the team members. The reason is, on the first day of the race, there was a technical error that prevented the Garuda UG-22 car from reaching the finish. Even after a number of repairs were made, the Garuda UG-22 car failed to race because it was 3 seconds late in entering the track. On that day, tears of sadness colored paddock number 524 belonging to the UNY Garuda Team. Although quite devastated, it is not a reason for team members to continue to drag on in sadness. Hands shake again along with words of encouragement, prayers are spoken louder. The hope of the Garuda UNY Team is rising again.
The second day of the race is proof that effort and prayer will not betray the results. I Kadek Bagus, Driver for Garuda UG-22 Team said, “That day we woke up much earlier, we thought much harder, worked much more thoroughly than yesterday. We did a massive evaluation of yesterday's problem. We believe on the second day we can give our best”. The first attempt was made at 08.30 WITA, the Garuda UNY team immediately took 1st place with an achievement of 541 km/L. Not quite satisfied with the results obtained, the Garuda UNY team again took the opportunity to race and obtained an achievement of 544 km/L. Tears of emotion ran down the faces of the members of the UNY Garuda Team that afternoon. The team's hard work so far seems to have paid off when the achievements of Garuda UG-22 managed to break the record.

Sutiman, advisor for the Garuda UNY Team said, "The achievements achieved by the Garuda UNY Team cannot be separated from the prayers and support of the UNY Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and his staff, the Head of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and the entire UNY academic community. This victory is also the fruit of the struggle of the Garuda UNY alumni who continue to accompany their younger siblings in conducting research.” (Khad, 16/10/2022).
